Marino Rocks: Natural Architecture for Local Sea Life

Marino Rocks is another wonderful place, where you can get close to the nature, without leaving the civilized city area. It is just an hour drive, steep decent with beautiful sea views, and we are already parking on the most crooked car park ever. It does not have any lines, that are parallel to the horizon. You can even get a bit of dizziness every now and then.

The coastline in Marino is a steep cliff shore, ending with a rocky beach where large pebbles gradually as they approaches the water, get replaced by large stone slabs. This coastline is a natures monument of the Ice Age. It's hard to believe that the rocks covering the beach where washed up here by a glacier 600 million years ago.

The glacier itself was obviously without a doubt the most talented designer and sculptor in the world. Every stone and  every rock slab is a very unique creation by the glacier, we can just sit in shock and wonder of how the glacier was able to create such perfect lines and forms of the rocks. But, for the kids, the beauty of the rocks does not matter a single thing. For them - it is an entertaining attraction where they get a chance to jump and climb from one rock to another, and try hard to pretend that they will not wet their clothes in the water while doing their "parkour".

In some small holes, after the tide leaves, the sea life continues. The little crabs, mollusc and some other creatures living in there, minding their own business obviously not caring about what is above the water. They don't not take notice of the kids that obviously want to touch and play with the sea creatures. However there is a strict rule - not only the sea creatures but also the rocks in this conversational park are under protection. This is constantly shown on the colourful signs set up all around the beach. Therefore - look with eyes and not hands.

In the middle of the 19th century until the 70's of 20th century Marino was a hot spot for digging up minerals and useful resources like quarts sand and limestone. However at the end of the 70's the beginning of the restoration of the current region was begun.

It is quite tough to swim in this area - too many rocks. However, when it gets darker this area starts to fill up with fishers and lovers of a seascape and the sunsets. For those who do not love to walk on the rocks, there is a path above the cliffs, which is about 7.2km in length, where you can have a quiet and peaceful walk, while enjoying the nature. However we will write about that route later, when we decide to walk it.
