4WD adventure: Spear Creek Tourism Centre

Flinders Rangers is one of our most favourite regions in South Australia. We are attracted to the wild nature, almost untouched by the people, the opportunity to meet the animals in their native habitat, and beautiful scenery. Our 4WD vehicle allows us to reach the remote locations that are away from the bitumen roads.

This time, the purpose of your trip was to explore the area nearby the Spear Creek. We stayed at Spear Creek Tourism & Training Centre, offering a very pleasant and well-equipped Campground. The Campground has a comfortable toilet, shower, laundry, and kitchen with all the necessary kitchen stuff, which is an additional bonus when travelling with the small children.

The Tourism Centre also gives an opportunity to make a fascinating off-road tour. We decided to try this opportunity, not been afraid of the fact that, according to the Campground hostess,  the difficulty of the trail rated 6/10. We got a map, instructions and drove off.

The trail turned out to be just as complex as impressive. Some parts of the trail were really very difficult. Sometimes, during the long steep climb we were getting scared that the vehicle would not have enough power to reach the top. The same steep descents caused fear, but the brakes did not disappoint us, too. But honestly, there was no time to be afraid, because then we would not have time to admire the stunning scenery outside the windows, which constantly changed.

During the two hour trip we climbed quite high in the mountains.  On the next day, when we saw a few vehicles, standing at the latest and highest point of the trail, we were shocked to see how high we were able to get.

On the way we met a lot of wildlife: kangaroos, emus, and various lizards. And, of course, we have to tell about the grasshoppers. All the way we went literally in a cloud of these fascinating insects. They were everywhere - on the windows and in the cabin. They flew in and out through the open windows and jumped on children. It seems that grasshoppers have pleased the kids even more than the delightful sceneries.

  2. Australia is a very beautiful place with green fields and gardens. But this place seems to be a bit dangerous because of the animals and not a good choice to travel alone.
